The purpose of the article is to forlmulate the main contents of the terms «multipolarity» and «bipolarity », to historically analyze the development of the term «multipolarity», and also, owing to Russian Federation’s involvement in globalization process, to apply the main theories of «multipolarity» to the Russian reality. The article includes historical reference, describing the transition from the bipolar world to the multipolar one starting from 1989, the period of the Cold War end. Herewith it is accentuated that the new multipolar world considerably differs from the earlier multipolarity models, mainly due to confrontation of the East and the West. The article considers the significance of Russia in the developing multipolarity of the modern world. Multipolar world model, according to the author, at the present time to a large extent corresponds to the interests of Russia. It is characterized by a greater Russian Federation’s involvment into the globalization process. Russia’s integration into international economic and financial systems is growing. The author makes the following conclusions. Firstly, there is a great progress in the process of Russia’s joining the WTO. The said aspect will result in the complete Russia’s integration into the global trade system. Secondly, Russian companies more actively raise funds at world capital markets. Thirdly, in 2006 the direct foreign investments into Russia grew up, bringing new capitals, expert knowledge and technologies. Fourthly, Russian companies actively invest money abroad. And finally, fifthly, the role of Russia as a supplier of energy to the main international markets is growing considerably and will continue to grow. Summing up the work done, it is possible ti conclude that the economy is the main factor of the geopolitical image of the modern multipolarity. The geography promotes the development of various economic and political interactions between regions and therefore still actively takes part in formation of the geopolitical image of the world. Besides the economy there are other geopolitical factors of multipolarity formation. Among them are transport, electronic and information communication, scientific and technological progress.
